Gigabit FTTH … taking the next step
BKtel unveils its first Gigabit Ethernet CPE

FTTH – the future proof fiber network is entering a new stage with an enormous data rate growth. With its latest customer premises unit XON1500 BKtel is pushing this development, offering Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in point-to-point FTTH, the most popular network topology in Europe. Network operators have now the opportunity to invest in infrastructure providing a bandwidth of up to 1000 Mbps per subscriber.

The next step in the design of the FTTH access networks is called Gigabit. It provides the subscriber with the experience of a new broadband dimension. Ultra high speed surfing, Video-on-Demand in HD-quality and VoIP telephony is made possible by latest optical Ethernet technology used in BKtel’s new XON1500 series. An outstanding advantage of the unit is the upgrade flexibility it is providing to the network operator: The CPE can be used with Fast Ethernet and upgraded any time to Gigabit Ethernet without any hardware exchange at the subscriber’s premises. So the operator can choose when and where to upgrade the data rate only by adding new equipment in the easy accessible central office locations.

The XON1500-series is based on the Triple Play functions already known form the BKtel XON product family, but offers additional unique features:

Dual Phone Functionality: POTS/ISDN
Two analog phone ports are provided for connection of common POTS phones. Optionally ISDN phones or a complete ISDN PBX for small business solutions can be directly connected. Up to 8 phones can be used via the ISDN S0-Bus. Phone calls are converted into HD VoIP telephony and transmitted via the IP access network.  Alternatively two analog phone ports are provided for connection of common POTS phones.

The Gateway to Optical Home Networking
Gigabit data rates in the home can result in severe problems for in-home transmission. The XON1500 is prepared for the emerging technologies to address this challenge. It can optionally be equipped with an optical Gigabit LAN interface to integrate single network devices with an optical interface or to connect a complete optical home network. With a Small Form Factor Plugable (SFP) optical transceiver module the connection can be made with any type of fiber (SMF, MMF, POF) and optical connector.

RF Video Overlay: Multiple Options for TV-Services
The XON1500 series is equipped with an optical CATV- or a combined CATV + SAT-TV-receiver. The subscriber is not restricted to analog PAL signals on his TV set but - by simply using common Set Top Boxes such as terrestrial DVB-T, cable or satellite receivers - also digital TV is available. The advantages for the network operator are evident. He has a wide variety of different business models available from traditional cable TV to simple community antenna sharing. Needless to say that there is no change for the subscribers TV experience; it remains as simple as always.

A solid metal case for rugged quality allows installation in basements or utility access rooms. Another version in a modern designed plastic housing will be soon offered named XON1600, specifically dedicated for installation in living room zones. Both XON versions are equipped with a fiber management unit for an easy wall-mount installation.

Thanks to the broad range of potential services as well as the flexibility in the field, the latest member of the XON family becomes a reliable component in the design of high performance FTTH networks.
