Why precise time synchronisation is essential
in the digital age
GNSS over fiber / SYNCRO
In an increasingly digitalized world, precise time synchronisation
is an invisible yet critical foundation of modern infrastructures.
Whether in data centers, telecommunications networks, or
financial systems, nearly all applications rely on systems
operating at exactly the same time. This enables seamless
interaction between all systems and is therefore essential for
stable operations in global trade, in industry, and in digitally
interconnected applications.
With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, requirements are
increasing further: exponentially growing data volumes, real-time
applications, high bandwidth demands, and global connectivity
increase complexity and latency. Even the smallest delays can
have critical impacts. Precise time and synchronisation data are
therefore essential to ensure consistent communication, reliable
processes, and accurate coordination across systems,
industries, and regions - and to fully leverage the potential of
modern AI networks efficiently.
The basis for precise time data is the Global Navigation Satellite
System (GNSS). The highly precise atomic time references
contained therein enable synchronisation in the nanosecond
range and are received, converted and transmitted via fiber
directly into the data center using our SYNCRO time
synchronisation solutions.

SYNCRO – Fiber-enhanced GNSS
connectivity
The SYNCRO portfolio is the world’s first fully copper-free time
distribution link and offers three different applications for data
center and telecommunications customers looking for scalable
timing infrastructure solutions. One portfolio for all use cases –
from simple deployments to mission-critical systems – with a
focus on flexibility, scalability, reliability and precise
synchronisation as the foundation of modern AI and real-time
networks.
The SYNCRO product family includes the SYNCRO Max,
SYNCRO Eco and SYNCRO Mini systems, which have been
specifically developed to meet application requirements and to
integrate into existing infrastructures. Emphasis has been placed
on cost efficiency, scalability and reliability. The solution enables
secure, flexible and precise time distribution – without the
complexity of coaxial cabling.

Benefits from the latest Power-over-Fiber
generation
Power-over-Fiber (PoF) enables the transmission of energy to
power the antenna via the fiber connection and eliminates the need
for a separate power supply. Power is supplied directly via the fiber,
which significantly reduces installation effort. Full electrical isolation
avoids risks such as overvoltage, ground loops or electromagnetic
interference. Using fiber-based power supply, distances of several
kilometers between the RF source and the receiving system can be
bridged and antennas can be positioned spatially separated to
ensure additional security and redundancy.
Where precise time synchronisation is
indispensable?
Telecommunications /
mobile communications
Accurate time is necessary to
synchronise base stations (e.g. in
5G networks) and thus ensure low
latency and stable network
performance.
Data centers & cloud
infrastructures
Synchronized time enables
consistent data processing, stable
clusters and secure transactions
in distributed IT systems.
Banking & finance
Precise timestamps are crucial for
stock trading, transactions and
regulatory requirements such as
MiFID II.
Broadcasting & media
Time-accurate synchronisation
ensures correct alignment of
audio, video and IP-based
broadcast systems.
Transport & traffic
systems
Applications such as air traffic
management, navigation or
autonomous systems require
precise time for and coordinated
processes.
Industry 4.0 &
automation
Synchronisation is essential so
that machines, sensors and
control systems can coordinate in
real time.
Security & defense
sector
Military communication,
surveillance systems and critical
infrastructures require precise time
for reliable and secure operations.
Energy & smart grids
Accurate time enables the
synchronisation of power grids
and applications such as phasor
measurement units for grid
monitoring.
